Dr. Bill Ward
I was blessed and fortunate to grow up as the son, grandson, and great grandson of Presbyterian ministers. My father served a number of different churches during his career allowing me to have a varied childhood that created a birth state allegiance to the Chicago Bears, familiarity with intercity Michigan, idyllic summers on an ocean canal in Cape Coral,FL and teenage years in the international culture of Key West. After pursuing a college degree in business and completing summer positions for IBM, I came to believe that God was calling me to ministry.
My ministerial career began in Louisville, KY. I earned my M-Div from Louisville Seminary and an M.B.A. from Bellarmine University. Later I would receive a D-Min degree from Fuller Seminary. It was also in Louisville, KY that I met and married my wife, Rachel.
Together, we have served four churches in 26years: Howe, In; Joliet, Rockford, IL and now Hilton Head Island, SC. Each congregation has taught us about God’s presence, the gift of blessings, as well as the reality of human suffering. Most importantly, we have learned how crucial it is to hand down God’s word from one generation to the next. Across our 27 years of marriage and service, God has been very faithful. He has given us two wonderful sons. William, 23, who recently graduated from college and is working at a CBS affiliate in Tallahassee and Jonathan who is 20 and a sophomore studying Applied Mathematics and Political Science at Wheaton College. While raising these two boys, Rachel earned a doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Wheaton College and has been in private practice for the last 15 years. She is now beginning to build a community practice here on Hilton Head Island. These past two decades of family life have been central to my journey of faith. Praying for my children, problem solving with my wife, investing together in the life of the church, and trusting God’s promises.
Today, I am both humbled and honored to be the Senior Pastor of Providence Presbyterian Church on Hilton Head Island. This is a pressing, critical time in the life of the North American church. The challenges and blessings are many, and they are real. In such an atmosphere I stand ready to serve God with a faith made deep through experience and with a joy increased by years of biblical promises fulfilled.
